Gastrointestinal Cancers

Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, which include cancers of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, liver, pancreas, and gall bladder, contribute significantly to the overall cancer burden in India. Colorectal and stomach cancers are among the most commonly diagnosed GI malignancies, while liver and pancreatic cancers account for a high proportion of cancer-related deaths due to late-stage detection. Together, GI cancers form a major share of cancer incidence and mortality in the country, with rising trends linked to lifestyle factors, dietary habits, obesity, infections (such as hepatitis), and tobacco use. A significant number of patients present at advanced stages, highlighting the urgent need for awareness, early screening, and timely specialist evaluation to improve survival outcomes.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Loss of Appetite

  • Unexplained Weight Loss

  • Persistent Abdominal Pain

  • Dyspepsia (Persistent Indigestion)

  • Early Satiety (Feeling Full Quickly While Eating)

  • Bloating Sensation

  • Change in Bowel Habits

  • Blood in Stools

  • Painless Jaundice

Why Awareness and Early Evaluation Matter

Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers often develop silently, with early symptoms such as indigestion, mild abdominal discomfort, altered bowel habits, or fatigue being ignored. Unfortunately, many patients are diagnosed only when the disease has progressed to an advanced stage. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes, allows for less extensive surgery, reduces complications, and increases long-term survival rates. Timely screening and specialist evaluation can identify precancerous changes or early-stage tumors, when treatment is most effective and potentially curative.
