Gynecologic Cancers
Gynecologic cancers include cancers of the cervix, ovary, uterus (endometrium), vulva, and vagina, and they represent a major health concern for women in India. Cervical cancer remains one of the most common cancers among Indian women, with India contributing a significant share of the global burden. Ovarian cancer is another leading cause of cancer-related deaths due to its tendency for late diagnosis.
With India reporting approximately 14–15 lakh new cancer cases annually, gynecologic cancers account for a substantial proportion of female cancers. Despite being largely preventable and highly treatable when detected early—especially cervical cancer—many cases are diagnosed at advanced stages, highlighting the urgent need for awareness, regular screening, and timely specialist care.

Why Awareness and Early Evaluation Matter
Gynecologic cancers, particularly cervical and endometrial cancers, are highly treatable when detected early. For example, early-stage cervical cancer has a 5-year survival rate of over 90%, while early-detected endometrial cancer also shows excellent survival outcomes. Unfortunately, many women seek medical attention only after symptoms become severe. Regular screening through Pap smear and HPV testing can detect precancerous changes before they develop into cancer. Early diagnosis not only improves survival rates but also allows less extensive treatment, better fertility preservation (in selected cases), and improved quality of life.
