Head & Neck Cancers

Head and neck cancers are among the most common cancers in India, accounting for nearly 30% of all cancers in men and a significant proportion in women. India bears one of the highest global burdens of these cancers, largely due to tobacco use (smoking and smokeless forms), alcohol consumption, and HPV-related infections. Oral cavity cancer is particularly prevalent and ranks among the leading cancers in the country. With India reporting approximately 14–15 lakh new cancer cases annually, head and neck cancers contribute a substantial share of this total. A large number of patients present at advanced stages, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness, early diagnosis, and timely specialist care to improve survival outcomes.

Why Awareness and Early Evaluation Matter

When detected at an early stage (Stage I or II), head and neck cancers can have 5-year survival rates of 70–90%, depending on the site and tumor type. In contrast, advanced-stage disease carries significantly lower survival rates. Early detection not only improves recovery and long-term survival but also allows less extensive surgery, better preservation of speech and swallowing, and improved cosmetic outcomes. Timely evaluation and intervention can therefore make a life-saving and life-changing difference.
